On behalf of the organizing committee, it is my great pleasure to welcome you all to the closing ceremony of the United Nations 2026 Games.
Today, we're celebrating colleagues representative representing permanent missions, the United Nations Secretariat, funds, programs, and specialized agencies come together through sports, friendship, and fair play.
Today, we're celebrating not only champions but every participant who demonstrated teamwork, respect, and the true spirit of the United Nations.
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the United Nations Closing Ceremony 2026.

It's my great pleasure to welcome you to the closing ceremony of the United Nations Games 2026.
Today, we celebrate much more than athletic achievement.
We celebrate friendship, mutual respect, and the ability of sport to bring people together across borders, cultures, and institutions established pursuant to United Nations General Assembly Resolution 80 78 slash 325 initiated by Turkmenistan and India.
The United Nations games have become a unique platform where diplomats, UN staff, and representatives of international organizations meet not around negotiating tables, but on playing fields.
Over the past weeks, we have competed in football, volleyball, basketball, badminton, table, tennis, pickleball, chess, running, and yoga.
Demonstrating that teamwork and fair play are values that unite the entire United Nations family.
As Nelson Mandela once said, sport has the power to change the world.
It has the power to inspire.
It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does.
Over the past weeks, we have witnessed the truth of these words.
At a time when our world is experiencing political divisions and growing uncertainty, the playgrounds of the United Nations games offered a different picture.
Here, we did not meet as representatives of different political positions.
We met as teammates, competitors, and friends.
Above all, we met as human beings, every handshake before a match, every embrace after the final whistle, every word of encouragement across nationalities reminded us that dialogue often begins with a simple recognition of our shared humanity.
Perhaps this is the greatest achievement of the United Nations games.
Taking this opportunity, allow me to express my sincere appreciation to everyone who contributed to the success of these games.
I thank the members of the organizing committee, our sport focal points, volunteers, referees, and technical officials for their dedication and tireless work.
Also wish to express our deep gratitude to our partners and supporters, especially the permanent mission of the State of Qatar, the United Nations Federal Credit Union, World Concierge, and the many individual contributors.
Those general support helped make these games possible.

I'm a professional athlete and have spent most of my life in the ring.
Over the years, I have learned one simple truth.
A real victory begins with a victory over yourself.
Every day an athlete learns to overcome fear, fatigue, doubts, and never give up.
But sport teach another very important quality, respect.
You can be opponents on the court, but after the final whistle, we remain friends.
In our Today, when I looked at this hall at the participants of the games and the medalists, I saw exactly this.
Chess People of different nationalities, cultures, and professions have gathered here.
Some represents their state, others represent the United Nations, but one sports ground, everyone was united by the same values, honesty, mutual respect, desire to win, and team spirit.
In today's world, we hear too often about disagreements, but sport reminds us that there are always more similarities between people than differences.

To all of you here, this wonderful self selected group of people from the UN who have taken an interest in sports, take an active part in the sports and keen to attend today the medal ceremony.
I want to welcome you all and to say that we have had an outstanding third edition of these games, that it has coincided with the FIFA is a very happy coincidence.
We may not have a messy amongst our players here, but truly we have a golden boot and we have, I think, equally very committed sportspeople and to the sportsmanship that is truly what we have organized the games for.
In the spirit of the General Assembly resolution, when we gather for the UN games year after year, it is to celebrate the spirit of gamesmanship.
I think what you see broadly, we are in a difficult international environment, in a very difficult geopolitical situation where there is fragmentation, there are differences, very difficult for countries to be able to agree on many things.
But on the sports field, we empathize with each other, we play against each other, not as adversaries.
And once the game is over, whether you win or you lose, I think the affection and love with which you play the sport is also extended to those we play against.
During the FIFA championships, we rooted for teams we never knew about.
We rooted for players we never knew about, whether it was Cabo Verde or whether it was Egypt having spectacular games and victories.
We cheered for them as if they were our own.
I think that is what makes this unique.
When we sponsored this resolution along with our friends from Team Turkmenistan, part of the reason also was this, it's our civilizational dictum.
We believe in Masuaikutumbkama, the whole world is one family.
This concept that we are all part of the same family is most explicit when we play games or when you have these mega sporting events that bring all of us together.
We were happy that it's been over a decade since we have had the International Day of yoga.
In the last decade, we have seen yoga being celebrated on the summer solstice, the 21st of June every year around the world in so many world capitals.
It has not only become a health motto, it has become a motto for mental health.
And for overall harmony and wellness.
We were happy to have organized an international day of yoga here and also the yoga competitions as part of the UN games.
Likewise, in the sports of badminton and chess, there's been a long history of Indian participation and excellence.
We were happy to have organized these games as well, along with various partners and friends.
I think as we finish the third edition, We go with one recognition.
We can organize it better and in a bigger way if we can take care of the timing so that all delegates can participate.
If we do it off, working hours, more delegates will be able to participate, and we can have more sponsors, more active engagement, Um, but in this all, we also realize that leading figures from games and sports who come here to encourage are truly an inspiration.
We have just heard Turkmen martial arts fighter tell us that the most difficult thing is that you are your own benchmark.
You're not fighting against someone else.
It is finally yourself that you have to win over.
It is yourself that you have to gain control over.
Um, and in that sense, you have to best yourself.
If only this remained the motto for the international system at large, we would be a much more peaceful and a happier place.
Nevertheless, in the true spirits of UN Games, we'll continue to believe that that will become the motto of the United Nations as we move ahead, we will best ourselves, and we will be the best version of what we can be.

As we head into the next edition, let us plan better, make it bigger, and focus on the timing so that all of us can better participate.

The United Nations games have brought together colleagues from permanent missions, from the UN Secretariat, and organizations across the UN system.
Those games do remind us that sport is much more than competition, as we've heard from previous speakers on the panel this evening as well.
Sports is a universal language.
It builds bridges, it fosters understanding, and it creates connections.
To the medal winners, congratulations.
To everyone who participated.
You have already won by contributing to the spirit of these games.
The true achievements is not measured by scores or rankings, but by the friendships forged and the teamwork that you have displayed.
So as the UN Department that supports the implementation of the General Assembly's work on sport for development and peace, DSA recognizes the unique power of sport to advance inclusion, to promote well being, and to strengthen communities.
I'm really pleased to see those values reflected over the last few weeks of the games.
Beyond impressive athletic performance, we've seen people coming together across institutions, across cultures, across nationalities and backgrounds in that spirit of friendship, respect, and fair play.
So dear friends, in a world facing many challenges, moments like these reminds us of what is possible when people come together with a shared purpose and a shared commitment to mutual respect.

But good afternoon, Excellencies, distinguished guests colleagues, partners, friends, and of course, all the athletes that are here with us today.
As Mr.
Gard said, I'm here representing the Department of Global Communications, more importantly, our Department's Football for the Goals Initiative.
And it's just great to be here among so many sportsmen and sports women here that are receiving these beautiful awards up here in the medals and so I regret that I didn't compete.
I would at least like to have been on the field or the pitcher somewhere as part of the games.
I'd of course, like to thank the organizing committee and the co chairs of permanent missions of Turkmenistan and India for the great efforts put forward to put together the games and to every mission, every UN entity and every family who took part and all the volunteers whose work behind the scenes made it all possible.
It's truly a special thing to be a part of these games.
And the games rest on a simple idea, camaraderie through sport.
We can clearly see that in the videos we watched at the top here.
This diplomatic community has been referenced by the ambassadors, spends a lot of time negotiating difficult issues around tables, but there's tremendous value in coming together and sharing one playing field, which we all saw through the course of the games.
You competed against each other, of course, but in doing so, you encouraged one another, celebrated one another and built friendships that cross offices agencies and missions.
I trust that friendships were made.
Um, we've reminded ourselves that before we're negotiators, representatives or officials, we can be teammates of one international community.
That's why sport has always had a special place within the United Nations.
I thank the member states for adopting the resolutions that allow us to work on sport because it does speak a universal language and the recent World Cup has been referenced as well, we saw how that brought billions of people together, billions of people with a B across continents, cultures and generations, sharing a passion for football.
It creates opportunities for dialogue where there might otherwise be distance in a world where trust is increasingly valuable.
That's been referenced as well by the ambassadors today and sport provides one of the most human ways to build that camaraderie.
That's the belief that inspired Football for the Goals Initiative, which is the flagship UN Initiative, which gives the global football community a platform to advocate for and implement the sustainable development goals.
We're running out of time for the SDG, so getting football behind it, I think is critical.
That initiative brings together more than 470 organizations across 120 countries.
We'd like to get it to 193, of course.
From grassroots clubs and foundations, like our proud member, the United Nation Staff Football Club.
I hope there's some representatives here from the club, but also to major clubs and leagues, to national federations and all six of the major regional confederations that govern football.
Each of our members demonstrates that football and sport as a whole can be a platform for inclusion, equality, climate action, and peace.
The settings and scope in which these individuals and entities work may be different, but the principle is the same, break down the barriers that come between us and make communities stronger.
That's really exactly the spirit we have celebrated throughout the UN games.
I think we all recognize that sport cannot on its own resolve the challenges the United Nations exists to address, but it can help create the conditions that make progress possible.
It builds trust, it strengthens partnerships, and it reminds us that lasting cooperation begins with human connection.
As we leave the games, let's carry that spirit with us, not only into our workplaces, but in all our relationships, all the relationships we build and the work we do together in the service of peace, human rights, sustainable development, and international cooperation.

I'm the CEO of Miyagi Labs, an Ed tech company using AI to prepare students for exams around the world.
I'm here on behalf of the Gift of chess as a founding board member and as a chess master.
We founded the Gift of chess in 2020 with a core mission to use chess as a tool to catalyze opportunity unlock human potential, and build real human connection.
We manufacture our chess sets using recycled plastics stretching from Cabira, Kenya to Goma, DRC.
Our goal is to donate 1 million chess sets by 2030, reaching every single country in the world.
To date, we have already distributed over 200,000 chess sets.
We've supported the UNHCR Kukuma refugee camp in Kenya, donating hundreds of sets to schools around the camp, as well as orphanages, schools, and prisons around the world.
We sit here today at the UN, an institution whose core mission is to maintain peace and guide nations from conflict towards safety.
I want to encourage all dignitaries and delegates in this room to remember, sometimes a solution to a deeply complex problem can be as simple as playing a game of chess.
In many of the regions where we operate, traditional education is severely limited or entirely inaccessible.
For these children, the chessboard becomes their classroom.
It teaches critical thinking, the direct consequences of your actions, patience, respect for your opponent, and how to make decisive moves when it feels impossible to see all the paths in front of you.
Chess is more than a game.
It is a universal language, a bridge across divides, and an equalizer as we work towards global peace and human Let us not overlook the power of simple, tangible solutions to unlock the potential of the next generation.
